Llandudno Holiday 2009
Holiday time for Holsworthy Day Centre clients, friends and relatives that want a holiday with a little bit of help and supervision.
This year 31 of us went to Llandudno. We tried. and enjoyed, a new hotel that proved to have very good access for wheelchairs, excellent food, helpful staff and comfortable rooms. They had worked with us over several months to ensure that nobody with mobility issues had steps to their bedrooms and all had either a shower or bath according to their needs. A full itinerary included visits to all the following venues as well as two garden centres.
A fantastic trip across the Pontcysltte Aquaduct, in two different boats as one catered for disabled and one didn’t. A buffet was served on board, the sun shone and the film we took on the way over really emphasised just how very high it is!!
Penrhyn Castle. Just amazing. So plain outside, so very ornate inside.
Inside the Electric mountain. Next time you watch a big football match, just picture the Welshman watching TV in this mountain, trying to gauge when the country will get up to make a cup of tea so that he can let all the water out of the lake on top of the mountain in order to fire up the huge turbines in the mountain and give that vital boost to the national grid.
Up Snowdon in the mountain railway. Although nice at the bottom, the summit was shrouded in mist but the ride was enjoyed by all, we saw the new visitors centre and three people achieved a personal goal by climbing up to the actual summit behind the visitors centre. One had bad asthma, the other was terrified of heights. Well done to both of them.
As well as in Hotel evening entertainment, some chose to go out instead and we went to listen to two different Welsh Male Voice Choirs and to a theatre in Rhyl to see a play by Agatha Christie.
On the way home we stopped in Ludlow. Lots of black and white timber buildings. Rather steep for wheelchairs as the coach couldn’t get close enough due to road closures. Can you think of anywhere around here where you could see a butchers shop with a long row of rabbits for sale hung up outside!
A lovely carvery meal in Exeter rounded off the trip (only £5 as they have a ‘happy hour’ when the meals are cheap as long as you have it before 7pm) and we got back to Holsworthy at 10.30pm.
The weather was great throughout, sunny and bright. NO RAIN!! - just right for coach travel.
A huge vote of thanks go to all the volunteers (both mine and the ‘Guests’ who where pushed into service) for all their help. Also to the ‘outsides’ who joined us on holiday. We could never have afforded to run it for our clients if we had not had the extra ‘bodies’ as well.
I had to price the holiday on only 15 going but due to the extra numbers, we are going to be able to give everyone £50 refund.
